Frequently asked questions
What are page labels?
The page numbers your PDF reader shows in its page box. They can differ from the real position, so a book’s introduction can be i to x and chapter one starts at 1.
Does this print numbers on the pages?
No. Labels only change what the reader shows. To print numbers on the pages, use Page numbers or Header & footer.
Which readers show page labels?
Adobe Acrobat and Reader, macOS Preview, Foxit, PDF-XChange and many others. Some browser viewers ignore them.
Can I use letters or prefixes?
Yes. Choose a, b, c or A, B, C, or add a prefix such as “A-” to get A-1, A-2 for appendices.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser, so your files stay on your device and are never sent anywhere. It even works with the internet switched off.
